Salesforce Buys Growth Its Marketing Cloud Lost
SoWhatNowWhat — Signal
• Impact Threat Level: Medium — Salesforce buys a scaled rival to its shrinking marketing line, but buyers see no change until a close in fiscal 2028. Decision: GTM messaging • THE "WHAT": Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for about $5.66bn in enterprise value, at $47.50 in cash per share. • THE "SO WHAT?": Salesforce watched its marketing and commerce revenue slip by 1% in the final quarter it reported those numbers on their own. Meanwhile, Braze grew by around 26%. Essentially, Salesforce is using its cash reserves to buy the top-line growth its internal cloud tools failed to generate. The announcement stays completely silent on key deal terms, including the offer premium, expected cost synergies, and future product packaging plans.
Summary
Forget the AI hype. Salesforce lost 1% in marketing and commerce sales the last time it split out those figures, whereas Braze is up nearly 26%. So, Salesforce is spending $5.66bn in cash to buy outside growth, paying about 6.8 times past revenue by SWNW's calculations.

The press release skips all the important details. It fails to list the premium paid for Braze stock, sets no target for cost savings, and does not show how Braze fits alongside Marketing Cloud. It also brings up a new technical term: "SIForce". With the deal not expected to complete until fiscal 2028 due to shareholder and regulator checks, customers will not see any real changes for a while.
Treat the numbers with care as deal terms come from Salesforce's own release. The marketing decline and the integration history come from trade and analyst coverage. The multiple rests on Braze's fiscal 2026 total and its two latest quarters, so it is an estimate until Braze files its proxy statement.
What Happened: Salesforce × Braze
Price: About $5.66bn in enterprise value, paid in cash at $47.50 per Braze Class A share (Salesforce, 20 October 2026).
Timing: Salesforce expects to close in its fiscal 2028, subject to Braze shareholder approval and regulatory clearance. Fiscal 2027 guidance is unchanged and fiscal 2028 is not yet guided.
Target: Braze reported $227.2m of revenue for the quarter to 31 July 2026, up 26.2%, with net retention of 110% and 2,789 customers (Pulse 2.0, reporting Braze's results).
Implied multiple: About 6.8x trailing revenue and 6.2x guided fiscal 2027 revenue, and roughly 74x guided non-GAAP operating income (SWNW calculation from Braze's reported figures).
Not disclosed: The premium, synergy targets, pricing, packaging, and whether Braze stays on sale as a standalone product.
Why This Reads As A Growth Purchase, Not An AI Bet
Marketing Cloud's slide explains the deal. SalesforceBen reported that Salesforce's marketing and commerce sales slowed from 4% growth to 3%, 1%, and finally a 1% drop across fiscal 2026. The division still brought in $5.4bn, which is up 2% overall. After that, Salesforce folded those numbers into Agentforce Apps and stopped breaking them out, according to MarTech. Over at Braze, organic growth hit 26.7% in its latest quarter, marking four straight quarters of acceleration. One product line is clearly stalling, and the other holds all the momentum.
The AI language is packaging. Salesforce focuses heavily on Agentforce and smart AI tools in its announcement. In reality, it wants live customer data and strong mobile messaging tools. By paying about 74 times expected operating profits, Salesforce is spending money on fast growth.
Salesforce's integration record is mixed. Salesforce ran Tableau alongside its own reporting tools, and Marc Benioff later admitted that joining the two businesses was difficult. The Wall Street Journal, as picked up by HCM Technology Report, showed Slack slowing down after its $27.7bn purchase and proof that a major Salesforce acquisition ever boosted sales growth after a deal was done is scarce. Braze is now the sixth deal Salesforce has announced or completed this year, which creates even more work for itself.
This is contact centre convergence, not CPaaS. Salesforce brought out Agentforce Contact Center in March 2026, its own call centre product, following 15 months of building voice and phone tools. Fin, a $3.6bn buy completed in September, brings an AI agent for chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, and Slack. Braze now handles the outgoing side, covering email, SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, and app messaging. Salesforce shows no sign of selling raw voice connectivity yet. Braze lists Twilio as a partner, but currently CPaaS firms seems like simple infrastructure at this stage.
