Infobip's SIM-Based Number Verification: Aggregation, Not Innovation

So What? Now What! — Signal
• Impact Threat Level: Medium. This repackages an established Open Gateway API into a resale product, and rivals can copy it fast. Decision: GTM messaging • THE "WHAT": Infobip launched a SIM-based Number Verification service. It aggregates CAMARA Open Gateway APIs from mobile operators, so enterprises can authenticate users without OTPs. • THE "SO WHAT?": Infobip hasn't built new authentication technology. It has packaged an existing GSMA Open Gateway API into a resale product, the same layer XConnect, Motive, and Telefónica's own Open Gateway unit already work. The real fight is over who can claim the widest operator reach and land the loudest reference customer first.
Summary
Infobip rolled out a SIM-based number check service on 25 August 2026. It hooks into mobile network operator APIs using the CAMARA Open Gateway standards. This lets businesses match a user's phone number straight to their live SIM connection, cutting out traditional text-message security codes. No SMS codes are required. Infobip is pitching this as a fresh way for mobile networks to make money while giving companies a faster way to log people in, all tied into its main Network API setup.

Right now, Vivo, Telefónica’s arm in Brazil, is the only mobile network actually named in the announcement. Infobip also brought out its own commercial telecom chief to talk up how big the market could be, but the carrier backing looks pretty light for now.
Infobip hasn't said what it costs, how many mobile networks are actually connected, or if any real business clients are using it yet. Number Verification is not new. It is already a standard set by the GSMA and CAMARA, and plenty of companies sell it today. XConnect, Motive, and Telefónica’s Open Gateway platform are already in this space, while Vonage pulls a similar trick using Ericsson’s network. So look at this as a distribution play, not a tech breakthrough. It only works when Infobip gets mobile networks on board, and the release stays quiet on how many are currently signed up.
What Happened: Infobip × SIM-Based Number Verification
Launch: Infobip rolled out a new SIM-based number check tool on 25 August 2026. It joins up the CAMARA Number Verification API across its mobile network partners, giving companies a direct way to log users in and prove who they are.
Mechanism: It verifies a user's phone number by checking their SIM directly against the active mobile network. That means no waiting for a text code and nothing for the user to type in manually.
Commercial model: Infobip is pitching this as a fresh way for mobile networks to make money. Instead of signing separate deals with every single operator, businesses can get access to the whole lot through a single connection.
Named backer: Vivo is the only mobile network actually named in the release, with Leonardo Silva (who leads their B2B messaging and Open Gateway work in Brazil), brought in to back up the launch.
Why This Reads as Aggregation, Not Invention
Number Verification isn't new. Infobip is just the latest to resell it. The GSMA already made Number Verification a standard through its CAMARA project. Plenty of companies are already selling this exact service to businesses, including XConnect, Motive, and Telefónica’s own Open Gateway setup. Vonage has a similar setup that uses Ericsson's network assets. What Infobip is really adding here is reach. Thanks to its carrier links, individual mobile networks don't need to go out and hire their own enterprise sales teams to sell this.
The revenue argument holds up. The evidence for it doesn't, not yet. Sending text message security codes costs mobile operators a lot of money and opens them up to serious fraud. Swapping those out for a direct number check just makes good business sense. Infobip hasn't shared any adoption figures, customer names, or pricing details yet. All we really have is a single endorsement from a Telefónica brand in Brazil. That hardly proves companies are rushing to buy this across the rest of Infobip's network.
Watch how rivals talk about this, not whether they can build it. Because the main API is a shared standard, rival CPaaS vendors can easily build the same thing. The real battle here comes down to who connects the most mobile networks first and who snags the biggest customer names to talk about it. That is a marketing race, pure and simple.
